Anime Detour 2016

2016 marked my second year at Anime Detour, an anime convention near Minneapolis, Minnesota, and the first one where I actually went to a few panels. Since anime series aren't normally my thing, I wanted to see some music-oriented panels to find some new music I could discover, and also what I could purchase in the process. While I was initially focused on finding Japanese music, I was also intrigued by the K-pop panels offered. I ended up missing the second panel, The History of K-Pop, but I did catch K-Popalypse, a sampler reel of the previous 365 days in K-pop hits, and found a bunch to enjoy, particularly the BigBang track Bang Bang Bang.

Those were only 30-second snippets, though. The two Japanese music panels, both of them on Saturday, featured the songs presented in full. For these two, I'll give overall impressions, along with linkable tracklists.

J-Indie: Music Outside Of The Anime Sphere
1:30 PM - Edina

The music here was all pretty recent, within the last five years or so, and most of it appealed to me pretty well. The presenters were starting to run out of time, though, so they weren't able to play all of the songs listed on the sheet above. There was also a technical problem with how the videos were ripped, so the presenters had to play the songs themselves from iTunes and repeatedly joked about the sync issues that resulted. Honestly, it was never really an issue, I personally would've enjoyed it with or without the visuals.

It's also incredibly unfortunate that a bunch of the videos here were blocked thanks to YouTube Red being a thing, so trying to link them here was a bit of a pain for me. The below playlist is based on the full sheet list, not the cut version presented.

The back of the sheet listed Facebook and Tumblr pages for the panel, although the Facebook one didn't seem to be working.

Tracklist:

5. Saisyusyojyo Hikasa - Sayonara DNA
6. Good Morning America - Catch & Release (video blocked in US)
7. Kavka Shishido - ラヴコリーダ (video blocked in US)
10. Shishamo - 僕に彼女ができたんだ (video blocked in US)
13. Sakanaction - ミュージック (video blocked in US)

Japanese Music Bento
10:30 PM - Plaza 3

It was either this panel or the Saturday rave, and I'm pretty glad I chose this, cuz it was the single best panel I'd been to the entire con. Literally everything that was played appealed to me in some way, a lot of it was stuff I'd either never heard of before or was only barely familiar with, and the presentation of the material was smoother and really, really fun.

I should mention that despite loving the shit out of this panel, I don't quite remember the exact sequence of music played. At the end of the panel, the guy presenting posted a link to a photo of the playlist, but I completely forgot to get it on my phone. This list is based on what I remember it being.

(brief summary of Yamantaka Eye's controversial first band Hanatarash, shown with this destruction video)
11. The Mad Capsule Markets - Tribe (video blocked in US)
14. The Gerogerigegege - Boys Don't Cry / Satisfaction

Music Hauls

During the con, I picked up L'Arc-en-Ciel's albums Tierra and True for 20 bucks each, which is probably about how much each of them would've cost with individual shipping from Buyee. The same dealer also had Hikaru Utada's Singles Collection Vol. 2 for about 30 bucks, and since I have all of her studio albums, I figured I should hold out for a way cheaper price to get the songs I don't already have. I also saw Puffy's stateside An Illustrated History compilation there, but I wasn't sure if there was anything on there I didn't already have so I passed.

Afterwards, I found Babymetal's Metal Resistance at a Best Buy on the way back home for about nine bucks, which I still need to get to listening to.

------

In summation, I'm very glad I was able to return to Anime Detour, and I'll definitely try to come back next year to see what else I can find. Having all of this new music to seek out and explore also made me feel extremely invigorated to be a music nerd.

Re: YouTube's sudden "purge" of Japanese music

Thankfully, only these videos of Mad's songs have been the only videos on my account that are blocked in my country. Still, it's pretty big groups like this, AKB48 and B'z that are getting the brunt of this new purge.

This email sets up all that I'd really need to say, honestly. From what I'd heard of this newfangled YouTube Red thing, it already sounded like a pretty half-baked idea that was doomed to fail, but knowing that it has brought upon this side effect to those on my side of the pond is just making me dread its existence even further.

I should note that this sudden blockage of a LOT of Japanese music is apparently only affecting those who live within the United States, such as myself. I know that the main base of my audience is from Japan, so for you guys, this isn't an issue at all. Hell, this might even blow over pretty soon for us, I have no idea.

However, this does give me an opportunity to reflect on how YouTube has introduced me to 99% of the Japanese artists that I've covered on this blog, and how frightening it is to me that the ability to discover new content similar to it could just up and disappear at any moment. I, personally, can access the entire discography of The Mad Capsule Markets whenever the hell I feel like it, since I've now collected all of their releases.

Someone from my country with a potentially passing interest in Japanese music, however, who also might find YouTube the most accessible means to discovering older bands from all over the world, could go without finding that band that could change their entire musical tastes in a snap-- just as Mad had done for me. (Pretty much all of Mad's discography is blocked at the moment.)

I can't imagine how my taste in music would fare if I'd waited longer, and run into some mass blockade preventing me from giving that kind of music a chance. Knowing me, I'd probably just try some less desirable site like Dailymotion or something, but I can see someone else giving up on those prospects entirely because they can't find one that could suit them.

For now? Us Americans will have to go find some alternative site, maybe one that's focused on Japanese music, to see newer music as well as music videos we wouldn't have access to on YouTube currently. Hell, Puffy just released a music video for their new single yesterday, and I had to go to a site called JPopSuki.tv to check it out. (It's a really good song, by the way! Welcome back, Puffy!) Maybe this will all blow over in a couple weeks and the videos will be watchable again, but who knows.

I'm personally very grateful for the opportunities YouTube has given me to find my way into Japanese music, and I hope anyone else here with that interest will still be able to forge a musical path that they can find personal happiness with in spite of this new setback.

B'z Singles Guide (Part 3)

B'z needs little introduction to Japanese music fans: they're the highest-selling Japanese rock band of all time! They've existed since 1988 and have formed a vast treasure trove of a discography in those 27 years... one which can be difficult at times to navigate. While they've released nineteen full-length studio albums as of this post's publication, they've also released fifty-three singles, plenty of which have material not present on their albums.

Some of their bigger non-album singles have been collected on their numerous best-of compilations, like the "Treasure" and "Pleasure" lines, but others stay relegated to only the CD singles they originally appeared on. Using the excellent, highly detailed B'z wiki at offthelock.com, I have created a guide to understanding where exactly every track on all of their singles stand in their discography, which will help me with figuring out which singles to go after, and it will hopefully become of great use to you as well.

This portion of the guide covers singles released by B'z after the release of their 2015 single "Red". As of the initial writing of this intro, no more singles have been released, but this article will be updated as each new single comes out.
